For many women, this phase brings a confusing array of symptoms that may come and go unpredictably. ## When Does Perimenopause Start? Most women enter perimenopause in their mid-40s, but it can start as early as the mid-30s. Black women, in particular, tend to experience perimenopause earlier and may have more severe symptoms. ## The Most Common Symptoms **Irregular periods:** This is often the first sign. Your cycles may become shorter or longer, heavier or lighter, or you may skip periods entirely. **Hot flashes and night sweats:** Sudden feelings of warmth, often with sweating and flushing.
