The overlap is significant, and many women go undiagnosed for years. ## Why Thyroid Problems Increase at Midlife Thyroid disorders become more common as women age, with risk increasing significantly after 40. The hormonal changes of perimenopause can also affect thyroid function, and autoimmune thyroid disease is far more common in women than men. ## Symptoms That Overlap **Both menopause and hypothyroidism can cause:\*\*:** - Fatigue and low energy - Weight gain - Brain fog and memory problems - Depression and mood changes - Dry skin and hair changes - Cold intolerance - Irregular periods (in perimenopause) **Symptoms more specific to hypothyroidism:\*\*:** - Severe constipation - Very slow heart rate - Puffy face and swelling - Hoarse voice - Extremely dry skin - Significantly elevated cholesterol ## Why Proper Testing Matters Many women are tested with only TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). But a complete picture requires: - TSH - Free T4 - Free T3 - Thyroid antibodies (TPO and thyroglobulin) Optimal ranges may differ from 'normal' lab ranges.
